CHEBOYGAN – A Cheboygan man is facing two felony charges in connection with the drowning of a 5-year-old boy on Lake Huron in August.
In a news release issued Thursday afternoon Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont said his department recently completed its investigation into the death of 5-year-old Kyzer Grant. Based on the report submitted to the Cheboygan Count Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Willem Roelof Vantielen, 77, of Cheboygan has been charged with one count each of manslaughter, a 15-year felony, and second degree child abuse, a 10-year felony.
“The investigation alleges that Vantielen was operating his boat on Lake Huron in Duncan Bay and allowed a 5-year old child, without a life jacket, to be pulled behind the boat on a tube. While being pulled by the boat, the child fell off and drowned,” Clarmont said in the release.
